The beach huts - a unique town on the beach
Løkken has its own unique town on the beach. The municipal authority has granted permission for 485 beach huts to be erected on the beach, most of which are owned by local inhabitants. The huts were previously used as summer cottages, but this practice stopped in 1933.
On the beach at Løkken the white beach huts stand in rows like pearls on a chain. Originally, the beach huts were small houses on wheels that were pulled down onto the beach so that hotel guests could change in privacy.
Drowned in their own success1925 saw a lot of private beach huts being built. The huts changed character and had windows put in, whilst using the beach as a source of recreation become more and more popular. So popular, in fact, that the huts were close to drowning in their own success and were fitted out as holiday cottages. This practice ended in 1933, however, when it was decreed that staying overnight in the huts was prohibited.
Later, regulations were introduced that the houses were to be placed in rows and that they were all to be painted white. The huts are usually placed at a distance of some 10-15 metres from the base of the dunes, their facades forming a straight line or a regular curve.

Primarily locals that own the beach hutsThe beach huts are primarily owned by local inhabitants. First you buy your right to the beach from the municipal authority and then procure a beach hut. There are carefully specified dimensions as to how high and wide the windows may be, etc. The huts are often handed down from one generation to the next, but the right to occupy the beach still has to be obtained from the municipal authority.

The huts may only remain on the beach during the summer season from 15 May until 15 September, and must be removed by 1 October at the latest.
At present, permission has been granted for a maximum of 485 beach huts on Løkken beach.
